Introduction to Motorcycling - ITM

An ITM is for students with no experience of motorcycling and must be completed before booking a CBT. The 1.5 hr session will provide you with an understanding of motorcycling, and allow you to learn essential safety principles and develop foundational riding skills that will prepare you for a CBT. Two students/One instructor.

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)

The CBT is a mandatory course for anyone who wishes to ride a motorcycle or moped on public roads (unless you already hold a full motorcycle license). It ensures that you have the basic skills and understanding to ride safely. The course is divided into five key modules and should be completed within one day, with a maximum of two students per course.

Novice riders with no experience MUST complete an ITM before a CBT.

CBT Renewal

A course designed for riders who have already completed a CBT and are required to re-certify every two years. The course is also a pathway to the Direct Access Scheme for a full motorcycle licence.

Price £175.00 per person.

Confidence Riding Course

The motorcycle confidence course is designed for riders who have successfully completed their CBT but feel they need more practice to build confidence on the road. It focuses on enhancing riding skills in a safe and supportive environment and typically includes advanced control techniques, hazard awareness, defensive riding strategies, and guided on-road practice to help students gain experience and feel safer navigating various traffic scenarios. It's an excellent way to bridge the gap between the CBT and independent riding.

Pre-DAS assessment

All students who wish to access the DAS (Direct Access Scheme) course are required to complete a 3-hour pre-DAS training session designed to prepare riders for DAS training and tests, focusing on building confidence and improving skills riding larger motorcycles. The course includes practical sessions on handling, balance, and road awareness, ensuring riders are comfortable and competent on the larger bike before progressing to the full DAS training.

At the end of the 3 hours of Pre-DAS, the instructor will assign you to either the 4-day or the 5-day DAS course, depending on your skill level.

Pre-DAS takes place on the Thursday prior to the start of DAS training and is included in the price of the 4 or 5-day DAS course.

CBT and theory test certificates are required prior to booking pre-DAS/DAS training.

DAS (Direct Access Scheme)

A 4-day or 5-day course covering both Modules 1 and 2 training and tests

Students allocated to a 4-day DAS course following pre-DAS join on Day 2.

5-day course:

Day 1: Conversion Day: 125cc to 700cc, usually Saturday
Day 2: Mod 1 training. Preparation specific to the Mod 1 test, usually Sunday
Day 3: (subject to DVSA availability): Mod 1 test, usually Tuesday after Day 2, and start of Mod 2 training following the Mod 1 test
Day 4: Mod 2 training day, usually Friday or Saturday at the end of the following week after the Mod 1 test
Day 5: Mod 2 test (subject to DVSA availability) usually Monday following the Mod 2 training. Ends approx 2.00pm

When signing up to a DAS course, students must commit to all dates allocated to each DAS course, including the 3-hour pre-DAS.

Prices:

5-day course: £1,440.00 (includes the 3-hour pre-DAS)

4-day course: £1,140.00 includes the 3-hour pre-DAS)

ERS (Enhanced Rider Scheme) Post licence training

This course is a voluntary training program designed for motorcyclists who have a full motorcycle licence and want to improve their riding skills. It helps riders become safer and more confident on the road. You will use your own motorcycle and the course is run on a one to one bases.

Price £55.00 per hour.

Gear Conversion Course

A 3-hour course completed after the CBT to learn how to ride a manual 125cc motorcycle with gears.
Focus is on the core skills and controls for riding a manual motorcycle and on mastering the basics of clutch and gear control
The course is designed for riders who have already completed the CBT on an automatic scooter, or those who wish to develop their riding with gears. Maximum of two students per course.

Back-to-Biking

This course is designed for licensed motorcyclists who have not ridden for an extended period. The programme typically covers essential aspects of riding, including control techniques, road positioning, hazard awareness, braking, and cornering. The course may also include updates on road regulations, safety practices, and advice on modern motorcycle technology. Delivered in a supportive environment, the course helps riders refresh their skills, rebuild confidence and prepare them for safe, enjoyable motorcycling after a long break.

This course is run on a 1-1 basis.

Edinburgh Motorcycle Training 15-day Instructor Preparation Course

This is an intensive training course that qualifies you to take riders through the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) and DAS (Direct Access Scheme) and leads to DVSA Instructor qualification.

Course Requirements:
Minimum 3 years with a full A or A2 motorcycle licence
Clean driving licence
Advanced riding qualification (or willingness to obtain one)
Educational or training experience preferred
